[She nods in agreement because that's probably true.]
Or they moved on to believe in other ones. People where I'm from tend to believe in what they need at the time.
[She's not saying it's right or true, but it's what they need and Cora isn't going to judge them for it. She believed in a lot of things for a long time with no proof.]
[She pauses, considering for a moment because that ... is a question. The Hales haven't exactly been faithful in the traditional sense, they don't have gods or even God. But they still have their beliefs. It's just not exactly the thing that's easy to word.]
Not ... gods or anything like that. We weren't religious and ... what happened to use didn't exactly encourage me to go find God. But growing up a wolf you're taught to believe in the safety of the pack, in your alpha. That we don't have to be killers just because of what we are - that it's a choice we make.
[A pause.]
For a long time I ... I had to believe that I would find my family again, one way or another. It was probably the only way I survived.
[And in some ways she was right. Derek was here, even if he didn't remember, and Peter was alive - though that information was more of a mixed bag when she heard some of the things he'd done.]
[Because doing that kind of work sounds dark and mildly terrifying and while most of the time the world she lives in is dark and mildly terrifying, people take to it different ways.]
[oh gurl. that sure is a loaded question. a bit of will's internal struggle plays out on his face while he considers how he best wants to answer.] I liked feeling like I was saving lives.
[She kind of gets that (sense motive 15). She considers for a moment one whether or not she should press further but decides that's not really her place to do so.]
I guess that's why most people go into law enforcement. I'd suck at it, though. I'd never be able to play by the rules.
[Because she wouldn't be able to follow the evidence that she can pick up on. Her sense of smell would probably lead her to the killer every time, but at the same time, they need evidence that they can take to court, not just the word of a girl with an exceptional nose.]
[Yeah, Cora doesn't know enough about him to tell that. She just nods in agreement. This entire world is better for her, honestly, because with people who are different so out in the open she doesn't feel as much like she's hiding.
She's not going to share that she's a werewolf with everyone she meets, but at least here she doesn't feel like she's quite so alone.]
I'll probably be back and forth. Someone I helped recruit is getting squired and I want to stay for a bit to make sure he settles.
[Translation: "I have to babysit a volatile baby werewolf on his first full moon through the Veil." Though it's actually a lunar eclipse, so it's more like he's babysitting her and helping her through her "I hate being human" phase.]
But being here and working is better than sitting around the castle with nothing to do. What about you?
That should be fun, and nice to have someone around that you helped bring in.
[ If only he knew the full scope of that. ]
I definitely wanna stay busy and I'll be here most of the time, but I always try to make it to the squiring ceremonies, and the after party.
Maybe when things start to wind down we can go for milkshakes like we talked about.
[ He hadn't really had time on his mission to even think about it, but when he'd made it through alive, and knew his mom was okay, his thoughts drifted to that conversation because it was something to really look forward to, especially knowing they'd made it through the war safely. ]
[Sure. Fun is one word for it. But Liam being with the knights is good. At least it's somewhere where she knows he's going to be safe.
There's a small flicker of a smile at the mention of milkshakes though. Not that she thought that he'd be thinking about it at all, given everything that had been happening, but the fact that he remembers is good all the same.]
Yeah, definitely. I think there was a movie involved too.
[ It's something so normal, which is especially nice after what they've been through, but more than that, he likes the chance it presents to know each other better. When they have the time to really step away and actually go do this, that is. Although staying this busy tends to make the time go by fast. ]
Movie and milkshakes. Perfect. [ He smiles, and then just slightly more serious (although trying not to get too deep about it): ] You know, I'm...really glad you made it through okay. [ He really didn't want to lose someone else. ]
[Cora's life is chalk full of too many life or death situations for that statement to be anything but serious, because she's said it to more than a few people here alone.]
Me too.
[She doesn't really have a lot of friends. She would have hated to lose one of them.]
[ He holds her gaze for a moment, just a soft smile on his lips to affirm his sincerity. And then for a moment he just looks at some of the other people shuffling around them, thinking about everything that will come next, after they've cleaned up here. He thinks about when they're at the castle again, and maybe running again with Cora, when they'll even have time again to do that. ]
You know maybe sometime when there's a routine again at the castle, we could train together? If you'd want, of course.
[She gives a bit of a shrug. She's not entirely sure how to respond at first, because she probably wouldn't listen to just anyone. But Helen is a bit of a special circumstance.]
You remind me of my mom.
[It helps that Helen is saying a lot of the things she would say.]

Do you think they still could? People don't always arrive from the same time. Maybe they might show up here.
